Gopalpur Upazila (Tangail) In the 1970 general elections, Awami League won absolute majority, but the then military government started conspiracies instead of handing over power. This caused a storm of protest in Gopalpur upazila like the whole of Bangladesh. The students formed the All-Party Struggle Council and started agitating. Public meetings, processions etc. continued under the leadership of Sangram Parishad in all educational institutions and important areas.

Bangabandhu's speech delivered on March 7, 1971 inspired the people of the area in the spirit of freedom and started the non-cooperation movement. On March 21, KM Abdus Salam of Baishkail village convened the All-Party Struggle Parishad and under his leadership, the students and youth started training for liberation war in the Gopalpur police station field with the useless rifles of the police. Nurul Islam (Madhupur, Commander of Asna), Sahab Uddin (Baishkail) and Chamir Uddin (Chatila) served as trainers. Besides, the students trained with bamboo sticks and dummy rifles in fields like Jhawail, Hemnagar, Nalin, Vengula, Shimla, Ramnagar, Mirzapur, Hadira, Sajanpur etc. Local Ansar members and members of the armed forces who come on leave or abscond and retire voluntarily serve as instructors at these locations.

    Pak army entered Gopalpur upazila on May 2 and set up a camp at the police station. From this camp they raided different areas of Gopalpur at different times. Maulana Abubakar Jamali (Makulla), Shafiuddin Munsi alias Shafar Munsi (Chatutia), Hossain Khalifa (Nandanpur), Tofazzal Hossain (Basubari), Gulu Mia (Porabari), Chan Mia (Baguata), Khalek Member (Hajrabari) are among the leading people who opposed the liberation war in the upazila. ), Absar Khalifa (Konabari), Abdul Hakim Khalifa (Basubari), Babar Ali Member (Jamtail), Abdul Majed Member (Atarbari), Abdul Quader (Hatbairan), Alamgir Hossain (Gopalpur Sadar), Kazi Abdul Awal Tarafdar (Suti Palpara). , Mofez Ali Member (Atarbari), Abdul Malek (Avhangi), Sahbaz Ali Sikh (Barshila), Chaman Ali Sarkar (Uriyabari), Zaker Hossain (Vongula), Nannu Mia (Naruchi), Abdus Chamad (Shimlapara), Sekandar Ali (Bakhuriabari) ), Habibur Rahman (Paishka), Dr. Azahar Ali (Barshila), Professor Abdul Khalek (Avhangi), Riaz Uddin Chairman (Sundar), Hossain Ali Member (Nandanpur), Absar Ali Member (Porabari), Sekandar Ali (Bakhuriabari), Hossain Ali Member (Bakharabari), Messer Ali Member (Hazarabari), Manik Mridha (Gopalpur Sadar), Khosru (Polisha), Abul Sardar (Polisha) and others are notable.

   Pak forces entered Gopalpur upazila and killed many people at Beparipara bridge over Bairam river. The deceased are philanthropists Mohini Mohan Pal, Kanai Lal Dey, Osman Ali (Chandrabari), Abdul Quddus (Bhutia), Muslim Uddin Master (Jhawail), Kazim Uddin Master (Alamnagar) and others. In addition, many people were killed by brush fire in front of the police station in a boat drowned in the river Bairam. Awami League leader Hatem Ali Talukdar's brother and 19 members of his family were martyred by the invading forces.

The invading forces and their local henchmen burnt and looted many houses of Hindus and Awami League leaders in Gopalpur. On October 10, the brave freedom fighters burnt and looted the house of Mia's parents. They also burnt the house of Nurul Islam Commander of Konabari. Besides, they commit various criminal activities including women torture, extortion, land and house grabbing.

   Gopalpur Thana Camp was a torture center and detention camp of Pak Army. They used to bring people from different areas and keep them imprisoned here and torture them.
